Why I need a power meter

This post by Joe Friel has been circulating the interwebs lately and it's a good read. I have never trained with a power meter because..well..I've been a grad student for over 5 years straight now and we all know power meters are not cheap. I do have the Kurt Kinetic power meter that works with my Rock n Roll trainer. It is not ideal but it gets the job done, at least when I have intervals to do.

Step 1: Get in the water

I procrastinated it as long as I could. It's officially been one week in the pool for me so now I'm officially training for "all three" sports. I don't really feel different..a little more sore and tired I guess but that's it. The hardest part has been waking up at 5:30am to get to the pool- I may need to rethink that strategy. It only took me one day of swimming to mess up my shoulder, though. Figures! I have crashed more than a few times over the years and have had some nagging shoulder issues. It looks like it's time to address them.

Southern Cross January ride #1

I have to admit I hate riding in the cold. I've been doing pretty much all my riding indoors when it's been cold lately..mostly because I was sick for 5 weeks but also because ever since I got frostbite on my toe a couple years ago I have to be really careful.

Happy 2012!

2012 will be the year of.....more blog posts? Maybe. It seems that 140 characters or less suits my busy schedule more. Anyway, there is A LOT going on this year and the hardest thing will be to not be overwhelmed and to "enjoy the journey" as they say. Not only do we have Southern Cross coming up next month, we have also been granted the National Ultra Endurance Series finale race this year at Fool's Gold 100.

2011 Favorites

I definitely can't complain..in 2011 I got to travel all over the country with my bike and even made it to Costa Rica for a much needed vacation. I was able to spend time with family (including dogs!), make great new friends, and ride incredible trails. I think it may have been the best year ever and for that I am very thankful.
