Weekend highs and lows

This weekend was supposed to be Southern Cross, the epic 55 mile "cyclocross" race. However, snow and ice in Georgia means some wickedly dangerous back roads, especially in the mountains. We don't have the infrastructure to take care of anything but the main roads when winter weather hits. As we were heading to the venue on Friday it took us over an hour to go 7 miles on Wahsega Rd., a windy, hilly paved road into the National Forest. Along that 7 miles there were numerous vehicles that had driven off the sides of the roads and some in steep ditches. We had to postpone the race, it was a very very hard decision to make but had to consider the safety of the racers and the volunteers first. Stay tuned for the rescheduled date..we want to run it sooner than later. So, that was pretty much the low. The next several hours was spent calling every single participant on the list to make sure they didn't try to come over to the race. Thanks to everyone for understanding the tough call we had to make.

The good part of the weekend was actually getting to ride on Saturday. Ron and Mandy (two of my clients and friends), Emily, and I rode 2+ hours of singletrack under fresh powder right out of Mulberry Gap...fresh tracks with just bobcat and deer prints ahead of mine. And, I actually kept my toes warm. Now, to figure out how to keep my hands warm....Mandy had some really nice Burton snowboarding gloves I may need to try out. She has gotten so strong and fast on the bike, I was very proud of her!! :) Watch out for her this season.

Oh, and guess what? After highs in the teens and twenty's all week it's actually supposed to warm up to the MID-FIFTY'S!!! Wow, it's going to feel like summer :-)
